Modern Math Intro to Geometry II
This course continues from the Fall quarter. A student can join, if she/he is familiar with the following:
a. definitions of a point, line, straight line, angle, and circumference;
b. measuring angles with a protractor;
c. notions of a straight angle, right angle, and opposite angles;
d. the fact that angles of any triangle in the Euclidean plane add up to a straight angle. Familiarity means understanding the proof of the fact.
e. how to use a compass and ruler to draw a triangle with given side lengths; and finally,
f. how to use a compass and ruler to draw an angle equal to the given one;
A diagnostic quiz will be given to the newcomers on the first day of the class. If a student fails it, she/he will be offered placement in a different class that better meets her/his needs. Please understand that math is a field where to have a positive learning experience, a student often needs to have some prior knowledge of the subject. This is a group class, so Oleg will not be able to cater to the needs of the students who are far behind the body of the class.
Contents of the course.
1. Polygons in the Euclidean plane. In this part, we shall study geometric properties of parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, and squares.
2. What is the shortest path from Home to School in your world? In this part, we shall learn how to construct the shortest paths connecting two different points in the Euclidean plane, on a cylinder, and on a sphere.
3. Circumferences in flat and warped worlds. The mystery of pi. In this part, we shall compare properties of a circumference in the Euclidean plane, on a cylinder and sphere.
4. Triangles in warped worlds. In this part, we shall learn what triangles are on a cylinder and sphere and study their properties.
5. What is so special about the plane? In this part, we shall take a good look at the parallel postulate and see why it doesn't hold for the cylinder and sphere.
6. Coordinates, or how to locate yourself on the plane, cylinder, and on the globe.
Each topic will take two to four classes depending on the students' progress. Please bring a few sheets of paper, pencils, a compass, and a ruler to every class. We shall draw a lot using these tools. A transparent sticky tape and scissors will also be needed for studying cylinders.

Modern Math: Intro to geometry II
It is the same course as the Monday class, but given at a much slower pace. A sequel to the fall course, Intro to Geometry I, it has the same prerequisites a - f as the Monday course. A diagnostic quiz will be given to the newcomers on the first day of the class. If a student fails it, she/he will be offered placement in a different class that better meets her/his needs. Please understand that math is a field where to have a positive learning experience, a student often needs to have some prior knowledge of the subject. Algorithms and Fractals
Requirements: the child must have some familiarity with fractions. She/he must be able to compute 1/2 + 1/3, 2/3 - 1/4, 1/2 * 1/2, 1/64 * 1/2, 7/6 * 1/4, and the like. A diagnostic quiz will be given at the end of the first class.
1. How to move a goat, wolf and cabbage across the river in a small boat, or intro to algorithms.
2. The Hanoi tower puzzle, or when will our world end? In this part, we shall find the optimal algorithm that solves the puzzle and figure out how long it takes to run.
3. Geometric series and a not-so-bright Shah. In this part, we shall study geometric sequences, series, and try to imagine 57 Mount Everests made of rice.
4. The Sierpinski triangle, or meet a fractal! In this part, we shall learn what the Sierpinski triangle is, compute it's area and study its relation to the Hanoi tower puzzle.
Each topic will take two to four classes depending on the students' progress. You need to buy the Hanoi tower puzzle for your child. Regardless the course, it's fun to play with, inexpensive and sold all over the Internet. I have purchased mine for $15, including shipping, at Amazon.

A Modern Look At Elementary Arithmetic
Requirements: the child must be fluid at adding and subtracting single-digit numbers. The child must have an abacus with ten beads on a wire.
Contents of the course.
1. Parts of a number. It is a typical kindergarten and elementary school problem to break a (positive integral) number into a sum of two. In this part, we shall learn how to break a (positive integral) number n into any number of parts, from one, n = n, to n, n = 1 + 1 + ... + 1.
2. The abacus, or why our system of counting is called place-valued. In this part, we shall learn to add and subtract numbers using the computer of the ancient world, the abacus. In the process, we shall also learn foundations of the decimal place-value numerical system currently used by humanity.
3. Multiplication through gardening. In this part, we shall learn that multiplication is nothing else but figuring out the area of a rectangular garden. In particular, this approach explains why a*b = b*a for any multiples a and b.
4. How did the ancients do it? Egyptian multiplication or the powers of two. In this part, we shall learn the fist way to multiply numbers invented by the human kind. In the process, we shall start implicitly learning powers and the binary numerical system.
5. Place-value systems, binary versus decimal. In this part, we shall learn how to go back and forth between a binary and decimal representation of a number.
Each topic will take two to four classes depending on the students' progress.
