Please note: This class is offered in small groups in-person on Monday's and Wednesdays or online. The time is based on the availability of the students. Students are scheduled for one time slot, one day per week.
Prerequisite: the ability to do 3-digit addition and subtraction, and beginning to learn multiplication. We will reinforce multiplication and begin to learn division and fractions. Other skills to learn will be determined by what students know and need to work on. Possible subjects will be telling time, Roman numerals, counting money, graphing, 2-dimensional shapes, place values and rounding, and decimals. Class structure will depend on the students in the class. We will work as a group when possible, but students will also work individually if that works best.

Literature comes alive through the performing arts as students improvise, create, and interpret scripts, incorporate personal experiences, debate ideas, and work with a myriad of interactive and immersive tools to explore history! This year, “We the People: A Kid’s Guide To Justice” explores justice and the law from ancient Greece and Rome, through the Salem Witch Trials, the making of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, slavery, the Underground Railroad and the Civil War, Women's Suffrage and the right to vote, and ending with the Civil Rights movement. Immerse yourself in the journey to justice - join the Theatre Lab Junior and be lit!

Come join the Egghead Detective Squad this session as we dust for prints, decode messages, analyze DNA, and use real forensic science techniques to crack the cases. The best part? Eggheads take everything home at the end of each class! All Eggheads will also get their Detective ID card, authorizing them to use real science to solve mysteries. At the end of the session, every Egghead will get their official Egghead Detective Degree – proving they’re ready and licensed to solve any mystery… using science of course!

This jump rope course will teach students the basics of Single Rope, Double Dutch, and Group Jumping. Students will learn a variety of skills and jump rope activities to improve confidence, endurance, focus, teamwork, and creative expression. All skills will be age appropriate.

Please purchase an 8 foot rope in the color of your choosing and bring it to the first class. Students will be responsible for bringing their ropes to class. People often tell me that they cannot draw. My answer is always the same: “Everybody can draw. You first need to learn how to see.” When you learn to play an instrument, you learn to identify the sound of the notes and you should practice often to become good. That is the same with drawing. This is an extension of the first semester class, but new students are welcome. We will continue to study the science of drawing (perspective and lighting), mixed in with doodling techniques, and other topics the students express interest in. Each student will be need a sketchbook and will be expected to draw in it regularly outside of class.

Join us in a fun and creative exploration through the ABC’s of Music and Movement! Each week we will learn a new musical genre corresponding to a letter of the alphabet (e.g. C for classical, D for disco.) As we build our musical and movement vocabularies, we will be incorporating games, choreography, and opportunities for independent expression. At the end of the semester, students will create their own performance using moves and music that they’ve learned along the way!

Geography Tales

Travel the world without leaving your seat. Each week we will visit a new country and experience the culture through folktales and songs. Students will meet Anansi, Juha, Coyote and other tricksters and heroes while discovering foods and customs that are part of the tapestry of world culture. Participants will also discover what makes a good story, while shaping and sharing their own telling of tales in a safe place. This class enhances creativity, public speaking, and the art of listening in a fun, interactive, and safe environment where even the shyest students can shine. We will follow story themes around the world and discover that we are more alike than we may have thought. (This class is not a repeat of Around The World from Fall 2020 - WS 2021).

Board And Card Game Design

The hobby game design course combines the fun of playing games with the lessons of teamwork, time and resource management, creative production, research, critical analysis, plus science, math, history, language, reading and writing skill development. Students will play board and card games while applying a critical eye to the structural mechanics of rules and content. They will participate in group discussions focused on game theories, game history, and game modification such as altering the rules of tic-tac-toe and play testing the revisions. Some discussion of the hobby game industry such as publishing and copyright is included. Each student will develop and produce their own analog game with all the components as a final project—the materials fee is for production of this prototype that they get to keep on the shelf!

After a year of not being able to play music together, we are back. This class is for beginning and more advanced students. In the first week, students will be evaluated and put into small groups according to level. Each group will meet for a 30 - 40 minute lesson and I will let you know the time slot for your child. Please note, this is not an hour class. The class Includes note reading and beginning music theory.
Students will need the following for this class:

Storytelling - Let's Tell Stories

Humans love stories, and a well told story is even more beloved. In this class, we will learn to tell stories from a variety of sources including personal and family stories, folktales, legends and more. Students will learn what makes a good story and how to offer supportive suggestions for helping their classmates tell a better story. This class enhances creativity, public speaking, and the art of listening in a fun, interactive, and safe environment where even the shyest students can shine. Because this class is virtual, we can make friends from near and far and will have the opportunity to hear other professional storytellers from far-away places.

The world has changed recently and this has affected all of us: children, parents and grandparents. Many times children are confused about what is happening in the world and are not sure how to express their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes children (and adults) are not even sure what they are feeling, or how to read their body signals to help them figure out how they are feeling. In this class, the students will be learning about feelings, their body signals that tell them information about how they feel and how to express their emotions in helpful ways. These skills and more will be practiced in a fun, thoughtful and creative manner through different activities, such as a variety of games, stories, art, music, role-playing and mindfulness.
Whether your child has taken my class before, or they are taking it for the first time, they will have fun making friends and learning about themselves. Your children will practice skills such as self-regulation, executive functioning, listening, respectful communication, giving and receiving help, and working cooperatively and fairly in groups. Students will also practice being mindful of our diverse cultures by building group cohesion, acceptance of differences, and the ability to understand different points of view.
This class will be both synchronous and asynchronous. There will be weekly activities that your child will do at their leisure during the week (asynchronous activities will be posted on a Padlet). When we meet via Zoom at our assigned class time (synchronous), we will practice, discuss, play games and share about our experiences.
Your child will discover their own superpower and celebrate other’s super-powers!

- 1. The basic elements of ASL, including handshapes, body placement, movements, and facial expression.
- 2. A brief history of ASL
- 3. The manual alphabet
- 4. ASL handshapes
- 5. Unique linguistics, artistic expression of ASL
The class will then move into an emphasis of exposure to the unique expression of ASL through learning stories, songs, and poems. Given the time constraints of this class, fluency in ASL communication is not an objective. However, recommendations and referrals for further acquisition of ASL skills will be provided.

We will explore reading and writing with a creative and fun curriculum especially made for this class, including MadLibs and Word Searches. Parents will be emailed the worksheets to be printed at home. Each student will work at their own pace, whether they are a beginning reader or reading entire books. As we assess each student’s development, those who are ready will begin to explore how to build a paragraph on their own. The students will get a chance to create small books and mini-brochures as they incorporate more and more of their independent ideas. Each week there will be a fun, hands-on English-themed exercises and games. Each student receives individual attention while also having time to cooperate with their peers. The class will be divided into 2 or 3 groups to accommodate everyones skill level.

Join us on an adventure through words as we explore poetry, short stories, and level-appropriate novels. Students will begin to think deeper about what they are reading, and make connections to other texts and to their own lives. They will learn how to strengthen their paragraphs and organize their thoughts into essays. Students will look at the elements of a good story, and even write some of their own. Each class will include a lesson and an activity to inspire expression and reinforce what students have learned. Students will be expected to complete weekly assignments on Google Classroom where they will also receive individualized feedback. Access to a Gmail account is required for this class.

This course is designed to give students a foundation in the knowledge of Earth and Space Science. This course will give students insight into geology, the environment, and the universe. Topics will include the composition of Earth, geologic structures and forces, the oceans on our planet, and natural resources. Earth’s spheres including the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and the atmosphere will be explored. Students will also learn about space exploration, the solar system, and the universe beyond Earth. This course will include lectures and labs.

In this class, students will learn to use tinkering tools safely and gain maker skills using The Tinkering Tool Kit. Students will learn basic cardboard construction and also explore other 3D sculptural forms and cardboard assemblage.
Due to Covid, each student will need to bring the following to the first class. The materials will be left in a class box. There will be no sharing of materials so please make sure your child is prepared to create art.

Think you've got what it takes to be an Egghead Machine Engineer?! Using LEGO™, students will design and build real mega machines like spinning windmills, lifting cranes, elevators, cars, and way more. We'll use wheels, bands, gears, pulleys, and tons of other cool specialty Lego pieces to build our machines, and then after the building phase is complete we’ll put them to the test. That means we'll try to break 'em, blow them over, and put weight on them. If you pass the test, you pass the challenge!

Come join the fun and take the fear out of public speaking. Modeled after Toastmasters, Speaker's League offers kids the opportunity to hone their public speaking skills through hands-on activities including the preparation and presentation of speeches, impromptu speaking, the use of visual aids, gestures, and vocal variety. The meetings are run by the students and they progress through levels as they master specific skills. New members are welcome.

Chess 2 - The Amazing (Ratings) Race

Grades 1 and up
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your “Chess Engines!” In this competition-forward class the students will be racing to Checkmate one another in an epic quest to become the highest chess.com Rated player by the end of the session. Conquering your opponents is paramount this time around since defeats result in a chess.com Rating decrease whilst victories equal an increase. We won’t just be competing for the Standard Chess Rapid Rating category; instead each player will get to choose from any one of the 50 or more different attainable Ratings, records, variants or achievements available on the website. So there’s a good chance everyone will cross the finish line in 1st place of at least one category. There will be Chess prizes on the line for the victors and for students who can break any of Sir Brian’s Ratings or records! Throughout the competition each player will have the chance to be Crowned King or Queen thusly gaining the power to command the rest of the class (their subjects) to assist them in their journey to the top spot. Get ready to Ratings Race all the way to the CHECKered flag!
*All students should be confident in the basic rules of Chess. This is a perfect follow up class for any children who previously attended Beginners Chess and/or Chess 2.0.

The old saying goes, "Chess is the game of Kings (and Queens)," and in this class we'll find out why. Chess subtly teaches children all the qualities of a noble king or queen: perseverance, nobility, courtesy, benevolence, responsibility, problem solving, confidence, sportsmanship, planning, patience, social skills, critical thinking, imagination and more. And if that weren't enough, it's also super awesome fun! In this class we'll start at the beginning to discover all the different characters (pieces) of Chess and background information about who they are and where they come from. Then it's onto how they move on the board and the rest of the dynamic rules of this 2000 year old Game of Kings!

Grades 5 - 12
Students will need to know the basics of Photoshop, including opening images, working with layers, adjusting image quality, making selections, retouching images, using color, adding text and shapes, combining images, and applying filters. Students will work on several assignments in class throughout the semester with the guidance of the instructor. The projects are designed to reinforce what the students already know, and new techniques will be introduced to further develop both computer and design skills. Adobe offers an “All Apps” plan to students for just $19.99/mo. for the first year.

Beginners 1, Grade 3-4
The course is based on the soon to be published book, Mathematical Adventure with ORMC, Level 1,
From Optical Illusions to Fighting Dragons, by Dr. Gleizer and Dr. Radko. Beginners 1 is a two-year-long enrichment course for children in grades two through four.
The course is designed for mathematically inclined children 7 to 10 years of age. There are 33 lessons in the book. Each lesson takes two to three 50-minute-long sessions to cover. Each lesson is followed by homework. The lessons cover topics including advanced problem solving, graph theory, Roman and binary numbers, one-sided surface known as the Mobius strip, and vectors in the plane. We study the latter in the How to Kill a Dragon game.
To succeed in the course, a child needs to have some basic familiarity with long addition and subtraction as well as with multiplication of two-digit numbers. This level of mathematical prowess is usually achieved in the fourth grade of a standard US school. If your child is ahead of their grade level, they can start this course as early as in the second grade.
Beginners 2, Grade 5-6
Beginners 2 is based on the soon to be published book, Math Adventures with ORMC, Level 2, From Ciphers to Nets of Solids, by Dr. Gleizer and Dr. Radko.
The course is designed for mathematically inclined children 9 to 12 years of age. There are 20 lessons in the book. Each lesson takes two to three 50-minute-long sessions to cover. Each lesson is followed by homework. The lessons cover the topics including ciphers, functions, solids and projections, introduction to logic and microchip design, and more.

Learn to play the recorder or saxophone or brush up on your recorder skills. For beginning through advanced players. Private lessons can be arranged anytime Karen is not teaching a class at CLP, including Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in the afternoon and early evening hours.
